Ilulissat, Greenland
Flying day: Friday, June 05
Ilulissat, Greenland
Today we commence with a flight to Ilulissat, Greenland, located about 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Due to the town’s short runway, just under 3,000 feet, some aircraft in our group may require a commercial flight (not included), while others may choose to self-fly. Ilulissat offers direct access to massive icebergs and the polar ice cap. At the mouth of the 35-mile-long ice fjord, it’s surrounded by colossal ice formations from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, the most productive in the northern hemisphere. The Midnight Sun illuminates the ice until late, creating a magical glow.
During our stay, we’ll embark on a Glacier & Iceberg Cruise, navigating among towering icebergs and frozen floes. The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004, offers an unforgettable view of nature’s icy wonders.
On clear days, the landscape is surreal. Hundreds of icebergs surround Ilulissat, ranging in shape and size—from small doghouse-sized chunks to towering peaks larger than cruise ships. The ice fjord is home to one of the world’s largest and most active glaciers, advancing 20 meters per day and calving 10% of Greenland’s inland ice into the sea—an extraordinary natural spectacle unlike anywhere else on Earth
