Day 1 - Saturday, August 21: Home -> Bangor, Maine

Air Journey staff will welcome you at the Four Points by Sheraton Bangor for introductions and to attend a detailed briefing and flight safety demonstration. We’ll cover the route, regulations, flight plans, safety, etc.

Afterwards we’ll meet for a welcome cocktail before dinner.

Day 2 - Sunday, August 22: Bangor > Goose Bay, Canada > Reykjavik, Iceland 620+1,340NM

On our way today we will fly over the immense forests and numerous lakes of Labrador. There will be a technical stop in Goose Bay and Kangerlussuaq for those requiring one. Our flight takes us over ice-covered Greenland and then our second water crossing to Reykjavik. Because we will be approaching the Arctic Circle and the “land of the midnight sun,” we will have an astonishing 19 hours of daylight!

Day 3 - Monday, August 23: Reykjavik

Today we will go for an unforgettable, once in a lifetime flight tour over the fiery mountains and river, to see the Fagradalsfjall Volcano, and enjoy a landing near by the emerging lava. 
 
We will transfer to a close-by helipad and take our helicopter flight to see the vast and glowing lava field; vivid red rivers snaking from fissures; craters spurting fire and molten rocks dozens of metres into the air; and an ambience befitting the landscapes of Morder. After circling the Fagradalsfjall Volcano and surrounding Geldingadalur area, we will land near the smoking, flaming landscapes for a closer look!

Day 4 - Tuesday, August 24: Reykjavik, Iceland (BIRK) → Amsterdam, Netherlands (EHAM) 1,090NM

Our Journey continues to Amsterdam. Often referred to as the other "Royal Palace of Amsterdam", De L'Europe Amsterdam occupies a scenic waterfront location on the Amstel River. The stylish rooms of the hotel embrace local heritage with special attention to design detail and modern technology. 
 
The hotel also offers a selection of the finest haute cuisine in Amsterdam; Michelin-starred restaurant Bord'Eau and brasserie Marie.

Day 5 - Wednesday, August 25: Amsterdam

With our local guide, we will embark on a walking tour for an intimate and insider's view of this beautiful city, strolling past the UNESCO-listed canals and 17th-century gabled houses. . We will view Amsterdam's historical center including Dam Square, the Royal Palace, the Anne Frank House, the Rembrandt House Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the infamous Red Light District among other highlights, all while we learn about an intriguing historical background.

Day 6 - Thursday, August 26: Amsterdam

Today is at leisure to relax or explore on your own. Visit the Spa sanctuary at the hotel for luxurious body treatments and sublime skincare. Le Spa by Skins Institure is designed to pamper and nourish the mind, body and soul in complete seclusion of distractions.

Day 7 - Friday, August 27: Amsterdam, Netherlands → Dijon, France 180NM

Today our short flight takes us to Dijon, France, for a visit of the famous Burgundy region. Upon arrival, we will take a short drive to Chateau du Gilly, our oasis in the area. Chateau du Gilly, the former residence of the Cistercian Monks, has preserved its authentic 14th and 16th century character with its vaulted ceiling and surrounding moats. The property is ideally located in the village of Vougeot at the heart of the finest wine ("Grand Cru") producing area in Burgundy.

 

Enjoy the Castle's surrounding gardens, an ideal terrain for walks and running races. An outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, badminton court and bicycles offer a perfect stay for our next three days.

Day 8 - Saturday, August 28: Dijon

Today we will go for a full day tour of the Burgundy region, where we will have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits that have created some of the best "Grand Cru" of France. Our location in the wine-growing town of Vougeot has us surrounded by the great wines of Burgundy - Pommard, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanee, among others.

Day 9 - Sunday, August 29: Dijon

Today is free to relax and explore on your own.

Day 10 - Monday, August 30: Dijon, France → Beziers-Vias, France to Homps 360NM

Fly to Beziers-Vias, France. Upon arrival we will transfer to Homps, France, in order to board our two Barge boats - the Barge Roi Soleil and Barge Enchante.
 
Welcomed aboard with champagne and canapes, these two barges are some of the most distinctively elegant hotel barges - they are true river yacht cruising the French waterways. They glide, swan-like, along the most ancient and iconic waterways in France - through sunflower fields, rolling meadows and of course the leafy, plane-tree lined stretches of the Canal du Midi.

Day 11 - Tuesday, August 31: Homps to Ventenac

Today we will take a fascinating morning tour of Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today with its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting.
 
In the afternoon, we cruise through the trademark olive shaped locks of the Canal in the shade of the plane and pine trees, gently descending to Ventenac.

Day 12 - Wednesday, September 1: Ventenac to Argeliers

Today's excursion will be at the Abbaye of Fontfroide. Founded under the Benedictine order and then converted to the Cistercian, it became very influential during the Albigensian crusade. It has been tastefully restored by the Fayet family, well-known patrons of the arts. The Abbaye presents a chance to sample some local cuisine with lunch ashore in a spectacular setting overlooking the Corbieres vineyards.
 
In the afternoon, we continue to cruise the 300 year old tree lined winding canal to Argeliers, once an important clay quarry for the Romans.

Day 13 - Thursday, September 2: Argeliers to Capestang

This morning we will cruisie to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy a visit to the ARchbishop's Palace and the indoor market at the hub of this bustling canal side town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere.
 
After lunch, our barge oasis takes us through vineyards and pine trees along the "Grand Bief", one of the many engineering prowesses unique to the Canal du Midi. Our last mooring will be in Capestang, where we will overlook the 13th century Collegiate.

Day 14 - Friday, September 3: Capestang to Beziers-Vias → Menorca, Spain 210NM

Our cruising along the historic canal will come to an end today but not before venturing through the very first canal tunnel at Malpas. Engineered by Pierre Riquet, as were many aqueducts, the Canal du Midi could not have been completed without it.
 
We will moor at the top of the Fonserannes flight of locks overlooking the town of Beziers, disembark, reunite with our airplanes and fly to the beautiful Balearic Island of Menorca, off the eastern coast of Spain.

Day 15 - Saturday, September 4: Menorca

Today we will cruise the local waters by private boat (weather permitting) as we explore the island. There’ll be time for swimming and along the way we’ll stop at a local restaurant for lunch.

Day 17 - Monday, September 6: Menorca → Bordeaux, France 370NM

Fly to Bordeaux - the wine country of France, and spend the next three nights in a luxurious Hotel de Pavie. The hotel was once a convent where nuns offered shelter and protection to pilgrims and travelers.

Enjoy an outstanding experience in the heart of the medieval city of Saint-Emilion, a historic village. This region is one of the most famous in France and from the top of this beautiful village, you will discover a dazzling panorama of the ancestral vines of Saint-Emilion, a magnificent wine-growing landscape but also the first to have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 18 - Tuesday, September 7: Bordeaux

A full day tour will give you the opportunity to meet and share the life of a winery family, enjoy breathtaking scenery, discover with your private tour guide the fascinating history of the medieval village of St Emilion.

Day 19 - Wednesday, September 8: Bordeaux, France → Milan, Italy 405NM

Fly to Milan Linate Airport where we will transfer to Como – immerse yourself in Lake Como. Enjoy a breathtaking setting on the shores of Italy's most famous lake. Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como exudes romantic Italian style perfectly complemented by timeless Oriental charm. Day 20 - Thursday, September 9: Lake Como

With our local guide we’ll begin an exploration of Como, the lake’s main town, as we discover its historic center. After lunch, enjoy a cruise along Lake Como.

 

We’ll have the opportunity to observe along its shores the various small and characteristic local villages and magnificent villas that are not possible to see from land. Lake Como sits at the foot of the Alps and offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Italy’s Lake District.

Day 22 - Saturday, September 11: Milan, Italy → Deauville, France 415NM

Fly to Deauville where we will spend two nights at the private and most unique chateau of Count Denis de Kergolay in Canisy.
 
Enjoy the lifestyle of French royalty in this privately-owned Normandie castle. Set on 740 acres of verdant Normandie countryside and in existence for 1,000 years, the Château de Canisy is an historic presence of monumental proportions. Even more special, the property has belonged to the same family, as their home, for thousands of years.

Day 23 - Sunday, September 12: Deauville, France

Discover the sites of D-day (June 6, 1944) - the largest invasion force in history! Codenamed OVERLORD, it delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy (codenames UTAH, OMAHA,  GOLD,  JUNO  and  SWORD).
 
We will walk  among  the  cliffs, bunkers and edges old soldiers still talk about, visit several museums, D-Day memorials and the very moving American Cemetery.

Day 24 - Monday, September 13: Canisy

The Chateau de Canisy is a French Heritage Monument open only to guests of the chateau. Its 800 acre-park has lakes and colorful gardens. 
 
For those interested, we will enjoy a guided tour of the Chateau Estate and the surrounding park.

Day 25 - Tuesday, September 14: Deauville, France → Reykjavik, Iceland 1,135NM

After breakfast, we will launch for our over-water crossing to Iceland. There will be a stop in Stavanger for lunch and to refuel.

Day 26 - Wednesday, September 15: Reykjavik → Goose Bay, Canada → Bangor, ME 1,340+610NM

After breakfast and another in-depth briefing, we will head to Goose Bay for lunch and to refuel. There is an optional fuel stop in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, for those that require one. We will then fly to Bangor, ME, to clear US customs before flying our separate ways as we complete our Journey home.
