Itinerary
Fly to Quebec City, Canada and enjoy this lovely town full of history and culture.
We will meet at the beautiful Chateau Frontenac. In the late afternoon, there will be a briefing on the Journey including the first leg which will take us over Quebec to Schefferville.
Fly to Schefferville, Canada for a technical stop and lunch.
We'll then continue on to Iqaluit (previously named Frobisher Bay) situated on the south coast of Baffin Island at the head of Frobisher Bay.
Today we will fly to Ilulissat. Note: The runway at Ilulissat is 2,800'. For aircraft needing a longer runway, you have the option to fly your plane to Kangerlussuaq (45NM) and take a commercial flight to illulissat.
Located about 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Ilulissat is the most accessible place to see both massive icebergs and the polar icecap. The town has a beautiful location at the mouth of the 35 mile long ice fjord that is filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq. The Ice Fjord surrounds Ilulissat with gigantic formations of icebergs, calving glaciers, and isolated settlements. It offers breathtaking Arctic experiences all year round.
Experience the Midnight Sun illuminating the ice until late into the night.
Today we will enjoy a Glacier & Iceberg Cruise sailing past a fascinating variety of floes and icebergs.
On a clear day, the landscape is truly surreal. Hundreds of icebergs surround Ilulissat. They vary in shape from flat-topped hunks to jagged mountain peaks and in size from small doghouses to mega-cruise ships and larger. And that's just the part above the surface! The Ice Fjord, which is close to Hotel Arctic, was included in UNESCO's World Heritage List at the 28th World Heritage Committee in the summer of 2004. And not without reason.
The Ice Fjord contains one of the biggest and most active glaciers in the world. Its 3,000 square kilometre area advances at a rate of 20 metres per day. The glacier "calves" about 10% of the inland ice that is pressed out into the sea from Greenland and there is nothing in the whole world that resembles it.
Today is at leisure to relax and explore the surrounding area on your own.
(Option: For those that chose to fly commercial from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Illulissat, you will take a morning commercial flight back to Kangerlussuaq to retrieve your plane and then continue flying to Akureyri, Icleand. Your day will be: Illulissat, Greenland to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (commercial), then Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Akureyri, Iceland (790nm))
Fly to Akureyri, Iceland where we will enjoy a spectacular view over huge glaciers and floating icebergs.
See the twin waterfall Godafoss and Lake Myvatn (the largest bird sanctuary).
Then head to the colorful majesty of the still active Krafla volcano and from there to sizzling Hverarond, famous for its bubbling sulphur mud pots.
A walking tour of Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) is next, a surreal lava park with harsh rock formations towering above and delicate flowers dotting the ground below.
Today we will fly to Reykjavik, Iceland where we will go for a swom in the Blue Lagoon, Iceland's most unique and popular attraction. Communicating a world of healing power, wellness and beauty, the Blue Lagoon was founded on a unique soure of geothermal seawater that originates in Iceland's extreme environment.
Enjoy an incredible Super Jeep tour where you will witness Iceland's most exciting natural attractions with a visit to the famous Geysir hot springs and geysers - one of them erupts every few minutes; take a look at the magnificent Gulfoss Waterfall; stop by the volcanic crater Kerid and the greenhouse village Hveragerdi; drive across Gjabakkavegur Pass to the Thingvellir National Park - a unique place of beauty with it's interesting geology and history; then cross Mosfellsheidi Heath to Reykjavik. It is certainly a great experience that is not to be missed.
As we fly over southern Greenland we will view beautiful scenery before landing at Narsarsuaq airport. The airport was built by the US Air Force during World War II as a stopping-off point for planes flying to and from Europe and has been operated as an international civil airport since 1959.
After breakfast, our Journey continues as we depart for our flight and head for Goose Bay - located on the remote Arctic tundra.
After breakfast, we will transfer to the airport for our flight back home.
